TIGER Initiative has over 1100 nurses working to bridge the healthcare quality chasm with information technology

The Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) Initiative released a summary report titled Evidence and Informatics Transforming Nursing: 3-Year Action Steps toward a 10-Year Vision. The TIGER Initiative aims to enable practicing nurses and nursing students to fully engage in the unfolding digital era of healthcare. Enabling nurses to use information technology (IT) seamlessly to provide safer, higher-quality patient care will require action on the part of many stakeholders, including professional organizations, academic institutions, government and policy makers, vendors, healthcare delivery organizations, health information management professionals, and librarians.

Today more than 500 nurses have volunteered their expertise to work on the nine collaborative teams. Each team is being led by industry experts on the topic. The goal of the collaborative teams is to share their findings and recommendations to all practicing nurses and nursing students through targeted outreach activities. Examples of the materials that the collaborative teams are developing include presentations, white papers, webinars, and articles for publication in specialty journals and text books.

9 Collaborative Teams formed to accelerate the work of the TIGER Action Plan!  The 9 teams will complete and publish their recommendations in October 2008.

While the TIGER Initiative started out as a grass-roots effort to engage with all stakeholders that are committed to a common “vision” of ideal EHR-enabled nursing practice, today more than 120 diverse organizations have joined the effort to collaborate on nine important topics. Each of the nine teams has developed a wiki that explains their goals, activities, and progress:

  1. Standards and Interoperability
  2. Healthcare IT National Agenda/HIT Policy Informatics Competencies
  3. Education and Faculty Development
  4. Staff Development/Continuing Education Usability/Clinical Application Design
  5. Virtual Demonstration Center
  6. Leadership Development
  7. Consumer Empowerment/Personal Health Record

As we prepare to publish our recommendations from the 9 Collaborative TIGER Teams, we want to make sure that we accurately represent all contributors.  We are asking all TIGER participants to complete  the following questionnaire.   We are also developing resource lists of participants that are interested in continuing to work on healthcare IT and workforce preparation issues that impact nurses.

This questionnaire is designed to gather background information and expertise on each participant of the TIGER Initiative.  Please complete the survey by August 20, 2008 so that we can accurately reflect your contributions in our final TIGER publications, due for delivery this Fall.  If you have any questions or concerns about the use of the data, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at
